About the talk

Conservation of nature and biological diversity depends to some degree on scientific knowledge and understanding being freely communicated in the public sphere and translated into policy and practice. Yet our research shows how important scientific information about threatened species, mining, logging and other threats to the environment, often does not reach the public or decision-makers because the ecologists and conservation experts in government, industry and universities are routinely constrained in communicating scientific evidence.

About Georgia

Georgia Garrard is an interdisciplinary conservation scientist whose research addresses the critical challenges of conserving biodiversity in human-dominated landscapes. She draws on the fields of ecology, conservation science, urban planning and design, conservation psychology, strategic communications and decision science to address critical environmental challenges, particularly those related to urban biodiversity, engagement of people with nature, and threatened species conservation. Georgia is senior lecturer in sustainability in the Office for Environmental Programs and School of Ecosystem and Forest Sciences at The University of Melbourne, and is a member of DELWP's Scientific Reference Group and Birdlife Australia's Research and Conservation Committee.  From 2017-2019 she was a Trustee of Trust for Nature Victoria.
