Plants for shade
Hi,
This is the first time I have tried this forum. I am gradually replacing as many plants as I can with indigenous plants in a small, shady garden. Last week I removed two roses from an east facing garden bed next to the side fence and am looking for a couple of plants to replace them. The loamy soil is rich and damp (drip system). The area is in shade all winter. There are Happy Wanderer and indigenous clematis vines on the fence trellis. I need a couple of shrubs to screen the lower part of the fence. Any suggestions?
Hi Ros, suggesting indigenous plants for your garden depends highly on where your garden is. Correa alba is rather coastal. Croweas aren't indigenous around Melbourne, but maybe you're in Sydney??
Could you give us a bit more detail about what country, state and suburb you are in, and whether the site is sloping and well drained?
Hey Ros, I imagine there is a selection of Correas that would do well. C. alba may be worth a try. Crowea saligna and exalata as well. You could try Dianella tasmanica for a strappy plant but I find D.amoena copes better in shade than full sun, is much smaller and could accompany your new bushes. Goodenia ovata does well in the shade and I imagine the prostantheras (mints) and Boronias will also do well .
