I'm trimming my Poas early this year because they seeded very early. I'm using an old curved pruning knife which is the best thing I've used yet. Does everyone else use a whipper-snipper? What else gets through a mature tussock?

Poas

The Poas weren't too happy about the early trimming. They haven't grown back nearly as well as when I did it in March.

Cutting back Poa

Hi Ann,
It seems a bit lonely around here so I thought I would join in.
I have cut Poa with brushcutters and sharp secateurs, and I have found the best time is in late Autumn/early Winter when there is enough moisture in the soil to sustain some good growth. The past few years have been very dry so I tend to cut them back later, but it depends a lot on the condition of the plants and their access to water.
I like to cut Themeda and other C4 grasses back a bit earlier so they get a chance to put on some growth before going dormant over Winter.
