Black Anther Flax Lily

Tufted clump which spreads by rhizomes with large strap blue-green leaves. Grows to 80cm, flowerheads to 1.2m. Flowers in spring and summer, fleshy purple berries in late summer.

Distribution:

Widespread throughout Melbourne.

Ecology:

Birds eat the berries.

Revegetation:

A hardy plant once established. While it grows more vigorously in a moist site, will grow in dry conditions, under trees and steep slopes.

Clean seed from berries and soak in diluted smoked water for 24 hours. Seedlings will start to emerge in 8 weeks, and can take over a year for most of the seed to germinate. Dianella revoluta var. revoluta is not as reliably grown from seed as other Dianella sp., even Dianella revoluta var. brevicaulis is much more reliable to germinate. Often grown by division.
