Cynoglossum suaveolens

Common Names:
Sweet Houndstongue

A small dark-green herb with rosettes of rough-textured leaves to about 15cm. Flowering stems soon develop extending to about 40 cm in vigorous plants but more usually to 20cm. The tiny white flowers have yellow centres and resemble its relative, the introduced Forget-me-not. Seeds have a velcro-like surface and attach to socks or fur. Small_Cynoglossum_flowers_1108.JPG

Distribution:

In Volcanic Plains Bioregion it occurs in Plains Grassland and Plains Grassy Woodland EVCs.

Ecology:

Gardening Hints:

Although not a particularly attractive plant (it has tiny white flowers), Sweet Houndstongue has an exquisite scent, although some people find it too strong. The flowering season can be quite long, throughout spring and into summer. It may also regrow rapidly following a fire in summer to flower again in autumn. This species will persist well amid a Native Grassland planting provided burning or brushcutting or mowing with removal of cut material takes place every couple of years to maintain open gaps.

Propagation:

Seed germinates readily in spring/summer but the plant often doesn't like potting mix/being in a pot. Seed over 2 years old does less well. When I have dug this plant up on a plant rescue it always has one long black root (0.5mm wide) going down vertically for 800-900mm. Perhaps it doesn't like the shape of containers.
