Ecology: 

Dense stands of Carex appressa may form important habitat features in a landscape. They may harbour native Swamp Rats, nesting Rails and foraging sites for Crakes.

Revegetation: 

In the Merri Creek this species favours swamps and damp flats alongside small waterways but seems rare alongside the larger waterways and doesn't seem to thrive when planted there. Carex species. The flowers are clustered in a dense head which matures to a deep brown.

Gardening Hints: 

This is an attractive and sculptural species for the edges of wetlands and pools. Beware the sharp leaf edges, not a pleasant plant to walk by in bare legs.

Propagation: 

Germinates well when day temperature is 25 deg C and above, late spring to early summer.
