Arthropodium minus
Common Names:
Small Vanilla-lily
A tiny lily, leaves to approximately 5 cm long, flowering stems to about 20cm but oten much smaller.
Ecology:
Occurs in skeletal soils. In the Volcanic Plains Bioregion it tends to occur on the shallow soils on the edges of emergent boulders, escarpment and stony Knoll edges. I have seen it growing in a single vesicle (bubble) on a volcanic rock.
Gardening Hints:
The tiny size of this plant makes it a good candidate for 'crevice gardening'; Planting into the cracks amongst paving, between boulders or at path edges to ensure the plant is not swamped by other plants. It will continue to flower if conditions remain moist and may flower throughout summer in ideal conditions.
Propagation:
Sow in late winter to early spring. Success is variable.
