Acaena echinata

Common Names:
Smooth Sheep's Burr

Differs from Acaena novae-zelandiae (Bidgee-widgee) by the upright growth habit, leaves with greater than 5 pairs of leaflets and heads of flowers in a ball.
This species is readily distinguished from the other Acaena species that have heads in spikes (Acaena ovina and Acaena agnipila), by the nearly hairless leaves and stems (see detail).

Distribution:

This is a relatively common component of Volcanic Plains Grassland.

Gardening Hints:

The fresh, fern-like growth has an attractive bluish bloom which presents a pleasing contrast with native grasses. The colourful reddish flowering stems and sculptural seed-heads are another attractive feature. The spikey stems of burrs may be removed if you prefer a neater effect (or own a dog!).
